Fifty-one years ago, the son of a German immigrant made an investment that would end up changing the course of history
in a small corner of the world. Essex Island, a small island surrounded by the Connecticut River and the North Cove
inner channel, was purchased by Louis W. Schieferdecker in 1955. Such was the beginning of a family tradition that is
unsurpassed in the industry.
Essex Island Marina began simply as a boat yard and a few slips. But there was potential, and “Lou” had a
vision. During the first decade, the marina developed and experienced growth in services and amenities. As time went
on, we increased the number of docks, installed the swimming pool, built the Deck and the gamerooms, and added a snack
bar and convenience store. Most recently, the addition of the Guest Services office has completed our repertoire.
There are no inhabitants other than EIM personnel and our yachting Guests. When visiting you are guaranteed privacy
and solitude. Our private launch, the EIM ferry, takes you across to mainland Essex in a swift crossing. We protect
our yachtsmen from intrusion; only EIM Guests, their family and friends are taken to and from the island to our landing
on the Essex side. Our seasoned launch operators are friendly and well versed about onshore and offshore events and
places of interest. The village of Essex is rich in sailing and nautical history where many America’s Cup sailors,
naval architects, and Yankee “lifers” co-exist.
Without realizing it, the most important contribution would not be found in any blueprints or planning. Today we see
it when the grown children of past Guests bring their children to share the experience. In the last fifty-one years a
thirteen acre island has been transformed from a place to “dock your boat” to a place where memories are made.
A thank you goes out to all of our Guests, because without you all would be for naught.
